HISTORY OF THE TWO EDITIONS

En 1975, Pierre jean Balbo published the first biography of Eugène ATGET, the first in-depth study about ATGET by Jean Leroy. As a young author passionate about the history of this period in Parisian culture, Mr. Leroy succeeded to collect many first hand tetimonies from friends and aquaintances who knew Eugene ATGET.

Seventeen years after this first edition was released, the tireless author completed an intense follow-up investigation that resulted in a richness of insight. Inspired by this bounty of information, Pierre-jean succeeded to make some of the last reproductions using the original glass negatives which even the historical government archive declined to do.

Great advances in printing offered the chance to rediscover Atget from a new angle . The first edition employed a sepia toned printing which was abandoned in the second edition in favour of a bichrome black and white printing process. This book is in french. It remains a cited source of much information that has been used in several impressive studies of Atget, a subject of long enduring interest to experts and the general public.
